What is PBIS

The PBIS Team is proud to announce that Campanelli School has achieved the “Implementing” level for the 2010-11 school year.  This was the fifth year the Network recognized schools at different levels of PBIS implementation and sustainability.  Campanelli was among a record number of PBIS schools recognized throughout the state of Illinois.  Thank you for your support with our PBIS program.

What is PBIS?

PBIS stands for Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports.  This is a proactive systems approach to establishing the behavioral supports and social culture needed for all students in a school to achieve social, emotional, and academic success.  Campanelli implemented PBIS five years ago.  Campanelli staff and students focus on three expectations:  Be Responsible, Be Respectful, and Making Right Choices.  There are posters in the classrooms, bathrooms, hallways and busses that describe what it means to be respectful, responsible and make right choices in all of these settings.  We have two ways that we recognize when students are following our three PBIS expectations: Caughtchas and PAWS Applause.

The 3 R’s Song

Caughtchas:

When students are displaying positive behaviors throughout the school day they can receive a “Cougar Caughtcha” from any adult in the building.  When students receive a “Caughtcha” they put their first and last name on the card and then they put the card in a box in the office.  Every Friday, several “Caughtchas” are pulled from the box and students get to come down to the office and choose from various rewards.

PAWS Applause:

When a whole class is following any of the three Campanelli expectations, any adult in the building may give that class a PAWS Applause.  The class gets recognized on morning announcements and then a paws print is marked on their classroom poster that is outside their room.  After so many PAWS Applause, that classroom gets a special incentive that is decided on by their teacher.

Cougar Camp:

During the first week of school the students attend “Cougar Camp”.  Each classroom rotated to different stations to learn about a specific area of the building and how to show the correct PBIS expectations.  Stations included: hallway, arrival/dismissal, bus/field trips, playground/recess and emergencies.

Celebrations:

There are several ways that students can earn celebrations for following the three expectations:

  • Every month each grade level picks a special award that their students receive for following the expectations
  • Each grade level or classroom also has special incentives when a certain number of PAWS Applause are received for a specific classroom
  • As a building we have five levels for how many “Caughtchas” as a school students receive.
  • Each trimester we have a special event to celebrate our positive behaviors.
