3/4 and 5/6 Magnet Students Create Inventions in Shark Tank Type Activity
Students in the Magnet Program come together once a week to complete a variety of collaborative activities to help students develop collaborative skills and friendships across classrooms and grade levels. During the months of April and May, students worked together in groups of 3-4 to complete a Shark Tank type activity. The activity was renamed the Cougar’s Den, after the Campanelli mascot, Cody the Cougar. Students brainstormed an idea for a product, created sketches of the product that highlighted the details, and created a sales pitch that included ideas and propaganda techniques to hook their audience. Students then presented their ideas to the Cougar’s, Ms. Durchslag, Mrs. O’Donoghue, and Mrs. Sudol, where each chose their favorite product idea. On the last day of school, the winners were announced based on the characteristics of creativity, usability, uniqueness of idea and collaborative teamwork. Each idea was amazingly creative and it was hard to choose, but using all of the criteria, the winning products were a versatile organizer to organize student desk bins, a product that can be placed on the tongue to change the taste of foods to foods that you like, and a “deal” that included three of the ideas – a pen/pencil with attached sharpener, an eraser that erases any error on any type of paper without changing the color of the paper, and a pen with a paper scroll inside. Photos of the winning products are below:
There were many more amazing ideas and it was so inspiring to see the students collaborative and creative efforts shine as they developed and presented their ideas!
