Ambassadors Club

Fifth and Sixth grade students will be taught the concept of becoming an ambassador. The concept of goodwill toward visitors and people new
to our community will be the focus of our meetings. During our monthly lunch time meetings we will promote the sense of community and opportunity to share/practice how each Ambassador is a positive representative of Campanelli. When guests come to the building, the  mbassadors will serve as hosts to the guests. All new students will be greeted on the first day of attendance by an Ambassador to make him/her feel welcome.

Battle of the Books

Battle of the Books (BOB) is a nationally recognized organization.  Students grades three through sixth enrolled in this club are required to read books from the provided list. Students have until April to read all of the books on the list. The list includes books from various levels of difficulty. A goal for this club is to teach students how to work together in a group for a common goal, expose them to award-winning pieces of literature and encourage self-directed reading outside the classroom.

BOB groups will meet once every other week for one hour after school to discuss the current BOB book they are reading. This is time to answer questions they might have about their book and to check in with the sponsors.  The students will need to update their reading log at this time as well as giving sponsors a chance to ensure the students are on the right track. In addition, it is advised for students to take notes on note cards or in a note book so they can study right before a battle.

Battle! In order to participate in a battle, the teams need to have read all of the books on the reading list.  The reading list must be completed in April. School-wide competitions will take place in April, the winning team will advance to district competition. The district wide competition will take place sometime in May.

These students will make decisions and set dates to work on specific Community Service projects, they will solicit volunteers or financial support to promote success for their cause. Gardening Club

The Garden Club will be starting March 1st and will run through May 24th. We will be working on re-landscaping the front of the school rounds with new plants and shrubs. District 54 science essential outcomes will be a focus for each grade level and will pertain to what the students will be learning in their science curriculum.

I will be looking for parent volunteers to also help out. In the spring, a plant donation will be organized and I will try and get local gardening experts to come and talk about gardening to our club members on various topics. A gardening stone paw will also be placed in the front of the school.

Math Olympiad Club

Math Olympiad Club is an afterschool math club for fifth and sixth grade students who have a love for mathematical problem solving. The goals of the club are to:

  • Develop mathematical flexibility in solving problems
  • Strengthen mathematical intuition
  • Foster mathematical creativity and ingenuity
  • Provide for the satisfaction, joy, and thrill of meeting challenges

Created in 1977 by Dr. George Lenchner, an internationally known math educator, the Math Olympiads went public in 1979. Last year, nearly 150,000 students from 6,000 teams worldwide participated in the Olympiads. All 50 states and about 30 other countries were represented.

During October-March, Campanelli students meet each Monday from 3:00-4:00 to practice math story problems. Once a month, from November-March, students participate in a five problem contest.

For the last two years, the Campanelli Math Olympiad Team ranked in the top 10% nationally which earned them a plaque for the school. This year, our team of 21 students has worked hard to learn new strategies and complete each competition problem successfully.
