Silent Auction – Friday, January 27th

We have a variety of items being auctioned off at the Silent Auction on Friday, January 27^th.  Many include breakfast and activities with a teacher and a few friends, lunch and games with a variety of different teachers and a few friends, lunch out with Mr. Kern and Miss Howard, meditation with Mrs. Leverso, a couple different creative art projects for a student and a few friends, a volleyball game against the magnet teachers, an ice cream sundae party for an entire class, an indoor picnic lunch with a teacher and a few friends, reserved parking for evening events, and an evening at Campanelli watching a sporting event- pizza included.  Many more exciting items to bid on!  The money raised goes to fund PBIS activities at Campanelli.

Back in November, the PBIS Universal Team sent home a survey to find out how familiar the Campanelli community knows about the PBIS program.  The results from that survey were sent home in December but are now available on the website for your reference.

Open Enrollment – Chinese Immersion Program January 25th

You are cordially invited to attend the District 54 Open Enrollment Fair to learn more about the Chinese Immersion program at Campanelli.

Do you have a child going into kindergarten or first grade during the 2012-13 school year? Campanelli would like you to consider the Chinese Immersion Program. Students in the Chinese Immersion program learn to read, write, and speak a second language while also learning to  ppreciate the Chinese culture. Representatives from Campanelli will be at the Open Enrollment Fair, on January 25^th from 6:00-7:30pm at Addams Junior High School, to answer any questions that you might have.

Additionally, there will be a meeting for parent’s who are interested in finding out more about our Chinese Immersion Program. This meeting will be held on February 1, 2012, from 6:00-7:00pm in the Campanelli gymnasium.

Finally, there will be an opportunity for interested families to visit our kindergarten immersion classroom. The dates for these visits are Monday,  February 6th from 9:00 – 10:00am and Tuesday, February 7th from 9:30-10:30am. Please call the school office 847-357-5333 to register to attend either of these visits.

Chinese New Year

Happy New Year!

Today we celebrated the Chinese New Year at Campanelli!  Our celebration helped to kick off 2012-the Year of the Dragon.  Our Chinese Immersion Kindergarten students led a parade through the hallways and classrooms.  All kindergarten through second graders created dragon masks to wear during the parade.  Traditional Chinese music could be heard throughout the building while the children marched in and out of classrooms wearing red spirit wear.  Many of our classrooms have had lessons on the Chinese New Year over the past couple of weeks.  We will continue to celebrate through next week as we conclude our festivities with the Lantern Festival on February 6^th.

Cougar Council Food Drive for District 54 Food Pantry

This year District 54 was proud to announce the opening of our District Food Pantry housed at Mead Junior High.  Our food pantry provides food for District 54 families who are in need.

Campanelli’s very own Cougar Council will be holding a food drive to help keep the District’s food pantry stocked with food.  Our Superbowl food drive will begin on Monday, January 23^rd through Friday, February 3^rd.

We are asking that during this two week period, students bring in non-perishable food items to their classrooms.  The classroom at each level that brings in the most food will win the spirit stick.

The following food items are our “Top Ten Most Wanted Items”, however, any and all food donations will be accepted:

1. Canned Meats (beef stew, tuna)
2. Cooking Oil
3. Cereal
4. Boxed Pasta & Rice (Hamburger Helper, Pasta Helper)
5. Baby Wipes
6. Juice
7. Spaghetti Sauce
8. Canned Vegetables
9. Paper towels and toilet paper
10. Feminine Products

Any and all donations will be greatly welcomed!  Thank you for your support!

3/4 Gym Night is a success!

I want to thank all of the students and parents that came out for our first ever third / fourth grade gym night.  This event was a huge success!  Mrs. Mondul introduced activities and ways for the students to stay active and get a workout in or out of school.  She also taught the parents a little about the fitness test that students take each year.

Spotlight on Campanelli

Our field trip to the Spring Valley
Nature Center

Have you ever been to the Spring Valley Nature Center?  Well, the first and second grade students in Mrs. Nowak’s class went there on a field trip on Monday January 9^th.

First, we played the deer game all together as a group.  6 students were picked to be deer, while everyone else in the group stood across from them.  With our backs turned away from each other, everyone would make a sign with our hands that represented shelter, water or food.  Then, the 6 students who were picked to be deer would run to find a matching partner.  Once the deer found a person with the matching sign, both people would become deer.  We played this game to help us learn what living things need to survive.

Then, we split into groups and went on a nature hike.  We saw a gall.  A gall is a growth on a woodland plant that acts as both a food source and shelter for the insect that makes it.  During our hike we visited 3 types of habitats: the wetlands, the woodlands and the prairie.  While visiting the different habitats we saw animal fur, a rabbit skull, a beaver dam, feathers, a coyote den, animal footprints, and scat.  (We won’t tell you what that is.)

Have you ever been to the Spring Valley Nature Center?  Well, if you haven’t, you should go!

Conferences-January 12th and 13th

District 54’s parent conferences will be held on Jan. 12 and 13. This is a great opportunity for your children to share their accomplishments. Your children may also share their personal, academic goals with you.

It is important that the teacher knows how an individual is doing in school, and it is important that parents are aware as well. However, it is most important that the child has a sense of how things are going and is involved in the goal-setting process.

If you have something you would like to discuss with the teacher without your child present, please make an appointment for another time. These conferences are designed to focus on the child and the child’s goals and accomplishments. The children enjoy sharing their world with their parents.

School will be dismissed for students in 1st through 6th grades at 11:40 am on Thursday, January 12th and there will be no school on Friday, January 13th. 

Early Childhood and Kindergarten students will not be attending either Thursday or Friday.

There is no school on Monday, January 16th in observance of Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday.

The Villa

Hello!  We are a few students from Mrs. LeVerso’s class.  For the past four years we have been working on a project.  It is to remember elderly residents at Addolorata Villa inWheeling, IL. at holiday times; Halloween, Veteran’s Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas, etc. We make a card that’s placed at their table.  Every resident on the Assisted Living side of the Villa gets one.  They think our projects are marvelous!  We love it too!
